Maine Labor Climate Council
The Maine Labor Climate Council (MLCC) is a coalition of Maine labor unions representing working Mainers across the state. The MLCC seeks to develop the labor movement’s vision for how to tackle the twin crises of climate change and inequality in a way that creates good Maine union jobs, reduces carbon emissions and economic inequality, and provides a seat at the table for workers and unions in this process. By educating fellow workers, building alliances, and advocating for policy solutions, the MLCC’s owrk is proof that we do not have to choose between a healthy planet and good jobs that sustain our families and communities.
MLCC campaigns
The crises of climate change, widening inequality, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic overlap in Maine’s public school system, where aging HVAC systems and energy-inefficient infrastructure impact student and staff health and well-being, strain municipal budgets, impact unions at the bargaining table and contribute significantly to the state’s overall carbon emissions.
Our Carbon-Free and Healthy Schools will confront these challenges head-on by urging our state and federal leaders to make critical climate upgrades to public school buildings: retrofitting school facilities, electrifying school buses, and installing solar on buildings. Together, we can create safe and healthy schools, slash energy costs, support high-quality union jobs, and contribute to a renewable energy economy in Maine.
